"My Brother's Keeper"
As the sun gleams through the thick ominous clouds, the men grew restless despite sleep deprivation. Feeling the adrenaline enhanced by the intensity of the situation at hand, everyone remained razor-sharp. Scanning their assigned sectors of fire, ready for the unexpected. The skipper, call sign: “Bravo Six”, a West Point graduate, dominates the radio frequency with short, and concise dialogue with his lieutenants. Carefully navigating his unit through Highway 8, abreast Euphrates river towards Nasiriyah. On point is the “Marlboro Man”, a well-respected senior non-commissioned officer. An all-American cowboy. As a veteran of the first Gulf War, he's been on this rodeo before. His vehicle creeps up to the next IV (intervisibility) line in a slow calculated movement to take a peek. Viewing through his binoculars, he gazed at the striking hues of the bright landscape ahead. He cracked a rare smile, savoring an unusual pleasure of staring back at an old adversary. Suddenly, the radio traffic burst with tense cross-talk. The war decides to manifest itself.
The theater’s illumination gently dims as he prepares to orchestrate his one-man show. Moments later, a fledgling soul is carefully poured smoothly into a wine glass. Without a trace of emotion in his eyes, he empties the transparent chalice with gusto, savoring every last drop. Tonight’s film noir happens to be a rerun of a macabre spectacle.
